Can shingles be resealed to prevent future leaks?

Yes, shingles can be hand sealed to address minor lifting and help prevent future leaks, but only when the shingles are intact and the leak is not from flashing or a seam. Most roof leaks start at flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights rather than the shingle surface. On older roofs, factory seal strips rarely re-bond well, so a small bead of roofing cement under lifted tabs is the usual spot fix, not a cure-all. If shingles are cracked, curled, or losing granules, resealing is short term; replace those shingles and check underlayment. Our crew regularly performs leak detection, hand sealing, shingle swaps, and flashing repairs for homeowners in the Laureldale area. Members of our Overhead Care Club receive priority scheduling and repair discounts.

Consider resealing when you see:

 • A few lifted tabs after wind, with shingles still flexible.
 • Small gaps or exposed nail heads that accept roofing cement.
 • No cracks in nearby flashing and no soft decking or widespread granule loss.

If water is actively entering, use temporary tarping and schedule a leak inspection as soon as it is safe.
Updated: 2026-03-11
Need help in Laureldale, PA? Call (610) 549-4063 or book online.
