What should I do if my toilet won't flush but is not clogged?

If your toilet won’t flush and the bowl isn’t clogged, check the tank parts and water supply first.

  • Lift the lid and make sure the flapper seals and the chain isn’t too tight or detached.
  • Check the handle arm/lever connection.
  • Confirm the shutoff valve is fully open and the tank fills to the marked level.
  • Adjust the float. Replace the fill valve if the tank won’t refill.
  • Pour 1 gallon of water into the bowl; if it flushes, the issue is in the tank.
  • For leaks, constant running, or no water, call for service. We offer same-day and 24/7 emergency plumbing across Chicago.
