What should I do first when a circuit breaker trips in my home?

First, unplug or switch off devices on the affected circuit, then reset the breaker fully: move it hard to OFF, then back to ON. If it trips again, stop and call a licensed electrician. Do not force a hot, buzzing, or sparking breaker. Castle Electric Inc. troubleshoots circuit breakers, outlets, and lighting, and provides breaker maintenance in Newton, MA.

Quick checks:

  • Look for a clearly tripped handle between ON and OFF.
  • Reduce load (space heaters, microwaves) on that circuit.
  • Note which rooms lost power for diagnosis.
