Why Is My Heat Pump Running But Not Cooling Properly?

Your heat pump may run but not cool if it has low refrigerant, restricted airflow, or a thermostat/control fault. Other known issues include a frozen evaporator coil, a stuck reversing valve, defective capacitors, electrical faults, or compressor trouble. Our EPA‑certified technicians service all brands and provide 24‑hour emergency repairs across Everett and Seattle.

Quick checks:

  • Set thermostat to Cool and lower setpoint 3–5 degrees.
  • Replace/clean the air filter and open supply/return vents.
  • Clear leaves from the outdoor coil and ensure the unit is level.
  • Check the condensate line/pump and the outdoor safety disconnect.
  • If ice is present, turn system off and let it thaw.
